Today’s theme: Good Character

Monday 6th October 2025 Better people, brighter tomorrows

Good Character in Islam

Islam teaches us that good character is shown in the small things we do every day: helping others, forgiving, smiling, showing love, being friendly and controlling our anger.

We show good character by:

Helping others
Forgiving
Smiling
Showing love
Being friendly
Controlling our anger

1 Guiding others to good

A man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ because his camel was exhausted and he needed another animal to ride. The Prophet ﷺ did not have one to give him, but he directed the man to somebody who might be able to help. That person gave the man a mount. When the Prophet ﷺ heard what had happened, he said:

“Whoever guides to good has the like of the reward of the person who actually does it.”

(Sahih Muslim)

2 Forgiving and making allowances for others

A Jewish woman brought the Prophet ﷺ poisoned sheep. He ate from it and she was brought. It was asked, “Should we not kill her?” “No,” he replied. The Prophet ﷺ forgave her and showed mercy, even though she had harmed him.

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

What can we learn?

Even when we cannot do something ourselves, we can help people find another person who can.

  • Encourage a friend to do something kind
  • Show someone how to do a good deed
  • Help someone find the help they need
  • Encourage others to make good choices

When we guide someone towards good, Allah can reward us too.

Question for the children: What good deed could you encourage someone else to do today?

What does this mean for us?

Forgive

Do not hold onto anger when somebody makes a mistake.

Understand

Try to understand how another person might be feeling.

Be patient

Give people the opportunity to put things right.

Show mercy

Treat others with the kindness and forgiveness that we would hope to receive ourselves.

Small actions • Big character

Good character does not always require a huge action. It can be seen in the small things we do every day.

A smile can brighten someone’s day.
A kind word can make someone feel welcome.
Helping someone can make their day easier.
Forgiveness can repair a friendship.
Showing love can make others feel valued.
Controlling our anger can stop a small problem becoming a bigger one.
Small actions make a big difference

Today’s key message: Good character is shown in what we do every day.
